                    2018-21

Andile Phewa is a photographer based in Cape Town. The questions here were how to identify intention and frames within visual storytelling. What is the relationship between artist, camera and the subject matter? How can we be precise with a medium that is ubiquitous and complex in terms of meaning-making and truth?

A4 Art Foundation was established as a laboratory for the arts in 2017. The organization supports arts practitioners and provides an interface for the public to engage with the process of artistic and curatorial production.

Circle Series is a project that looks at artistic practices and helps artists articulate their work into modes of presentations through critical sounding-boards, writings and exhibition making.

Structured as an in-depth engagement, it guides the artist through their own work, helps them articulate and formulate their intention and invites peers as well as critics to give feedback for the artist to use as a reflective method and enriched process within a community of practice.

Over a several week period I worked with the artist, first to establish the artist’s unique practice then to formulate questions and prompts to respond to. With up to two mentors a project is being established which in its various stages will be shared with the community for critical feedback sessions. These sessions themselves become guiding principles for the artist’s own articulation and writing. The result is then presented within an exhibition-esque format that shows the process, the traces and the work at the same time.

Katharien de Villiers is a mixed media artist based in Cape Town. Her practice is formed through collage and research. Writing, annotating and referencing becomes an integral part of her understanding of art making. Often unseen in the “finished” works, we created intentional space for these traces to be discovered and read in conjunction with the works.
